Abstract
According to the Higher Education Authority (HEA) since 2018 there has been a yearly increase in the number of registered disabled students attending higher-level education in Ireland, with over seventeen percent of students registered with a disability (HEA, 2023). Despite the vast research done by the LIS community regarding the benefits and uses of Assistive Technology hereinafter AT, within library services there has been little research examining and evaluating the available AT supports for Visually Impaired Students hereinafter VIS within Irish higher level education. Little is known about what technological supports are available for VIS within their third-level institution academic library. This study will fill this gap by providing an analysis of the available supports for visually impaired students within Trinity College Dublin, Galway University, and Atlantic Technological University. It seeks to ascertain what types of AT are available and evaluate their effectiveness. Overall, this study concluded that while third-level institution libraries provide some level of assistance and supports, there is a clear lack of onsite library support available. It also offers some recommendations for library policymakers to consider when constructing their library disability policy.
