Restaurant Jammet was the finest restaurant in Ireland from 1901-1967. Established by two French brothers Michel and François Jammet and subsequently run by Michel’s son Louis it was a bastion of superb French food and wine in the general austerity of the time. Located at 46 Nassau Street it stretched right back so that there was another entrance at no. 1 and 2 Adam Court at the bottom of Grafton Street.
Jammet’s Restaurant offered style, glamour, sophistication, superb food and wine until 1967 when dining out had become commonplace for the newly affluent Irish and parking impossible on Nassau Street. However, some say Jammet’s still lives on in the Dublin slang expression “you jammy beggar” meaning to have a great time at somebody else’s expense.
