Description
The period discussed in this paper is directly before the Stalinist era and was ostensibly quiet. Between 1917 and 1929 a mood of turbulent change prevailed. The Revolution was followed by years of devastating civil war, military communism and starvation. However, at this time, artists still had the freedom to pursue their artistic aspirations and their choice of themes. Their paintings still reflected their viewpoint, their way of seeing the world and their set of values. Food appeared frequently in the post-revolutionary paintings. Food gained a symbolic, philosophical meaning and determined the genre peculiarity of "food art".
