Abstract

In this study, a thermal-economic analysis was conducted to determine the optimum insulation thickness of retrofitted insulation walls in different regions in Ireland. This was based on the Heating Degree Day method (HDD). This dataset contains optimum insulation thickness, payback period, cost savings and carbon emission for all 25 counties in the Republic of Ireland

Methodology

The detailed methodology is contained in Chapter 3 of the PhD Thesis 'Optimising Retrofitted Insulation for Irish Residential Building Walls' by Rakshit Muddu, Civil & Structural Engineering, TU Dublin, 2023. the HDD method considers heat loss and gains as proportional to the equivalent heat loss coefficient of the building envelope. HDD is calculated by using long-term temperature measurements. Heating energy demands are then calculated based on constant outdoor and constant indoor base temperature. This base temperature is defined as the point after which heating is not required. Energy consumption of the building or wall is proportional to the difference between base temperature and the mean outdoor air temperature
