Abstract
This chapter will discuss two research communities, one focussed on Franco-Irish Studies and the other focusing on Food Studies. They negotiate conferences, peer-reviewed journals and monographs without it becoming a ‘blood sport’.The theme of this chapter is born out of a lifetime’s engagement with generous curiosity, which stems from a number of serendipitous life moments and meetings. It focuses on the important role that unique research communities can play in both our professional and personal lives. It builds on sociologist Ray Oldenburg’s concept of third places.
