Abstract

The Italian Telecollaboration project began in 2021 as a partnership between Language Studies at TU Dublin, DCU, and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy. DCU is no longer involved and the initiative now continues as a collaboration between TU Dublin students of Italian and Università Cattolica students of English. The Telecollaboration is offered as a 2 ECTS module in Università Cattolica (see Collaborative Online International Learning) while at TU Dublin it is integrated into the language interaction assessment for the Italian Language 2A module, within the IBL degree. During Semester 2, students from both universities work in pairs or small groups, engaging in five one-hour meetings over five weeks. Each week, students receive target language materials related to a specific theme, which they read or watch in preparation for their discussions. These materials guide their conversations with their Italian counterparts. Each meeting is structured to include 30 minutes of discussion in each language. Following each session, TU Dublin students reflect on their linguistic and educational experience using a structured reflection form, which helps them assess their progress and plan for the next meeting. Their experience is also discussed with the lecturer during their end-of-the year oral examination.
