Description
This paper begins by asking the question: when and how did red wine from Bordeaux (claret) become a luxury wine when for centuries it had been a vin ordinaire? The authors argues that this was the work of "middlemen" the Irish merchants who purchased the wine from chateux within weeks or months of production and then aged and blended and prepared the wine for the markets of Ireland, England and Scotland. It was these Irishmen both Catholic and Protestant who created luxury Bordeaux.
