Abstract
This research explainer examines how the buildingSMART Data Dictionary (bSDD) can support greater interoperability between Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Drawing on research presented at the 2026 Civil Engineering Research in Ireland conference, it explores practical approaches to automatically generating standardised GIS data templates, mapping existing asset information to common data definitions, and validating information against agreed requirements.
The explainer demonstrates how open standards and structured data can improve information quality, reduce manual processing and support more consistent asset information management throughout the asset lifecycle.
