The Feel-Good Gulag was one of a series of three short essays by leading commentators on the value of arts in Ireland commissioned and published by the Irish Arts Council in 2007 to 2008. This essay was launched in book form by Olive Braiden, Chair of the Arts Council, in 2007. Ms Braiden launched the series at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, saying: “We are delighted that distinguished commentators such as Ian Kilroy, Arts Editor of the Irish Examiner, John Burns, News Editor of the Sunday Times, and John Waters, Irish Times journalist and commentator, are among those engaging in this discussion and we hope that it will act as a stimulus to a much broader public debate.” The series was simultaneously published in the Irish language.
