Description
Precedents of inclusive tourism research are linked to analyzing the lack of participation of individual in different activities. Consequently, the exclusion of individuals in different experiences because of different reasons was described and addressed. Thus, one of the most important elements in accessible tourism research is tourism constraints. These can be defined as inhibitors and determinants of travel behavior.
It is widely known that individuals with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by constraints (Smith, 1987). These constraints can affect their behavior in multiple ways, such as preventing them from engaging in certain activities (Crawford, Jackson, & Godbey, 1991), influencing their preferences and decision-making process (Jackson, 1988), or altering their behavior. Although there is extensive research on accessible tourism and constraints, few studies focus on these inhibitors in religious destinations (Gassiot-Melian, Prats & Coromina, 2016, 2019).
Thus, the aim of this study is to understand the barriers that people with disabilities must face when traveling to a religious tourism destination and explore differences and similarities to what happens in other tourism destinations. This study takes place in Montserrat, Catalonia, Spain. Data is gathered using web scraping methods from one of the most popular platforms, TripAdvisor. Comments that mention challenges experienced by people with disabilities are extracted and analysed through text-mining techniques, such as word frequency analysis and sentiment analysis.
The findings will provide an understanding of the typical constraints encountered by people with disabilities. These challenges include issues such as lack of information, accessibility of information, and physical obstacles, among others. Additionally, the analysis will explore how individuals feel and what their intentions are regarding their behaviour. This research helps shed light on the constraints individuals with disabilities encounter at religious sites.
