Abstract

The Hajj pilgrimage is the most sacred da’wah ritual and has resilience against global crises and the impact of COVID-19. The cancellation of the 2020-2021 Hajj pilgrimage has implications for the length of the waiting list and the bio-psycho-social conditions of elderly Hajj pilgrims. This study aims to identify the role of female Hajj pilgrims who failed to depart in overcoming bio-psycho-social problems. This study is a field study with a socio-psychological da’wah approach. Data were collected through a Google Form questionnaire, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies of 203 elderly Hajj pilgrims who failed to depart from the Semarang area. The data analysis technique used a critical-interactive model. This study found 1) three problems faced by elderly Hajj pilgrims who failed to depart: health, psychological, and social problems. 2) The roles of female Hajj pilgrims include as opinion leaders, motivators, dynamic agents, and catalysts. These four roles prove that the actualisation of da’wah requires an appropriate socio-psychological approach. Elderly female Hajj pilgrims are not only role models in da’wah (Islamic outreach), but in their religious capacity as Abdullah and Caliph, they act as agents of development. By identifying the bio-psycho-social issues of elderly Hajj pilgrims and their roles, this study has identified key elements for developing mitigation regulations for elderly-friendly Hajj in Indonesia. The academic implications of this research form the basis for the theoretical development of technology for elderly-friendly Hajj and Umrah management.
