Abstract
Tourism, as a multifaceted phenomenon encompassing social, cultural, and economic dimensions has emerged as a driving force behind global socioeconomic development. Within this framework, religious tourism stands out as both a historically significant and contemporary form of travel with profound implications for host communities. Religious tourism refers to trips which individuals or organisations take for spiritual or religious purposes. It is no coincidence that many of the world’s most visited attractions are associated with ancient temples or the sites of miracles. These trips hold religious significance because of the rites associated with it. Pilgrimages and visits to holy sites are common practices in many faiths, including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Sikhism. This research paper examines the intricate interplay between religious tourism and local development, focusing on selected regions in India. This study aims to comprehensively investigate the impact of religious tourism on socioeconomic growth, utilising a multi-dimensional approach that encompasses business opportunities, investment potential, cultural promotion, infrastructural development, and employment generation. Through rigorous data collection and analysis, this research reveals a significant positive correlation between religious tourism and various dimensions of local development. Specifically, religious tourism leads to the creation of new employment opportunities, bolsters local economies, and enhances the social and cultural well-being of host communities. Additionally, it drives improvements in essential public infrastructure, elevating the overall standard of living. This research contributes to the body of knowledge surrounding the transformative potential of religious tourism in fostering sustainable and thriving communities. Beyond its economic benefits, religious tourism emerges as a catalyst for the infusion of fresh perspectives, innovation, and cultural exchange within local populations. As such, this study underscores the holistic impact of religious tourism, calling for continued recognition and strategic leveraging of its potential for sustainable development. This research gives policymakers concrete suggestions on how to advance religious tourism and make it a more sustainable industry.
