Abstract

Background: Evidence suggests that levels of psychological distress are elevated in staff who support people with challenging behaviour (CB) and intellectual disability (ID) in residential care. However, in Ireland, there has been little research examining the extent of this and determinants thereof. Specific Aims: This study explored psychological functioning and workplace related quality of life, and factors associated with such, in support staff in Ireland. Method: 109 participants were recruited through a social media platform. Levels of stress, depression, anxiety and work-related quality of life were assessed using standardised measures. A bespoke questionnaire assessed key work-related factors such as frequency of challenging behaviours encountered, years of service, training, supervision and support. Findings: Levels of psychological distress were significantly higher, and work-related quality of life was lower, than reference group norms. Work related quality of life was the main predictor of psychological distress in support staff, although frequency of challenging behaviours predicted anxiety levels. Work related quality of life was associated with age, training for, and support following, challenging behaviour rather than levels of challenging behaviour. Discussion: Findings suggest a distressed staff population, with low work-related quality of life, caring for some of the most vulnerable in society. However, given the relationship between organisational support (-v- challenging behaviour per se) and work-related quality of life, and between the latter and distress, there are solutions to this problem and this paper suggests such solutions lie in working conditions rather than personal or client characteristics. These findings should inform future provision of care.
