Scientific Research in Cuba: A General Analysis with a Special Focus on Energy, Agriculture and Technology

Abstract

An analysis of science in Cuba is carried out using data from the OpenAlex database. Examples are developed: agriculture, rice, technology in relation to the current situation: national food supply, energy and medicine. The predominance of research in biology and medicine and the low commitment in the fields of agriculture, energy, medicinal plants and technology are highlighted. Various development schemes are proposed. The conclusion is that research must be directed towards strategic areas: food and energy, must be less dispersed and that technology must be better taken into account. Three proposals are made: the development of a chemical analysis platform and the implementation of two platforms on the CRITT model: agri-food and biomass energy. Une analyse de la science à Cuba est réalisée à partir des données de la base OpenAlex. Des exemples sont développés: l’agriculture, le riz, la technologie en liaison avec la situation actuelle: apport alimentaire national, énergie et médicaments. On met en évidence la prépondérance des recherches en biologie et en médecine et le faible engagement dans les domaines de l’agriculture, de l’énergie des plantes médicinales et dans la technologie. Divers schémas de développement sont proposés. La conclusion est qu’il faut orienter la recherche vers les domaines stratégiques : alimentaire et énergie, qu’elle soit moins dispersée et que la technologie soit mieux prise en compte. Trois propositions sont faites : le développement d’une plateforme d’analyse chimique et la mise en œuvre sur le modèle des CRITT de deux  plateformes: agro-alimentaire et énergie biomasse.
