Abstract
The objective of this project is to examine the music of Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian with a view to analysing the origins and development of innovative harmonic and melodic material within their work. Having established the musical context in Europe and the United States from which both musicians developed, their musical styles are traced and analysed. The analytic framework used is one based on the organising principles underpinning the jazz solo of the time (circa 1920 to 1940). In examining Reinhardt’s and Christian’s musical outputs, the emphasis is put on identifying musical material which is anomalous to, or existing outside of, this framework. This is done through examination, transcription, and analysis of relevant audio material. The results indicate that both musicians use material drawn from musical genres outside of the jazz idiom but rooted firmly in the culture of their mother countries. The sources for this study consist of practitioners and pedagogues within the jazz genre, archivists closely associated with the relevant audio material, musicologists working in related fields as well as the audio material discussed. The historiography associated with the Western art music tradition, relevant American musical genres and the specific musicians discussed makes up the body of secondary sources.
