A Society of Patriotic Ladies: the Edenton Tea Party
Parallel Session 2, Day 1, 2016
Description
This paper examines a relatively little-known revolutionary event in British colonial America known as the Edenton tea party that took place on 25 October in Edenton, North Carolina ten months after its more famous namesake, the Boston Tea Party. Like the Boston tea party the Edenton tea party was an explicitly political event aimed at a new tax on tea imposed by the East India Company. However, unlike the Boston tea party the Edenton tea party solely involved women, the key participants being from elite local families.
